POP! Goes the Cherry :) @BklynBotanic

April 5, 2013 in Art, HISTORY, Share an Experience

Nature is an important and artistic part of life and sometimes you just have to admire and enjoy the beauty in it. Brooklyn Botanic Garden embraces nature’s beauty one a daily basis through their significant plant-life. One of the most beautiful times of year at Brooklyn Botanic Garden is the celebration of beauty in nature through the viewing of cherry blossoms.

Cherry-blossom viewing is in fact a Japanese traditional custom known as hanami. This custom is centuries old and consists of a festival-like atmosphere celebrating the beauty of flowers.  Brooklyn Botanic Garden keeps this tradition through the viewing of cherry-blossoms for a month, ending with Sakura Matsuri, which is a festival of Japanese culture and performance.

You can view the cherry blossoms starting from April 7th going until April 28th in Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Sakura Matsuri takes place from April 27th- 28th, 2013.  More information about the different events taking place during Sakura Matsuri can be found at http://www.bbg.org/visit/event/sakura_matsuri_2013.

The Inaugural Experience @BarackObama

January 23, 2013 in FASHION, HISTORY, Media, Share an Experience

Our trip to Washington, D.C. was well worth it. The city was full of life and vigor all in a cooperative effort to see President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden both sworn in during the 57th Presidential Inauguration. We analyzed the fashion and was very pleased with the efforts surrounding trend-setting.

Favorite moments?

The wife of Medgar Evans offering up that powerful invocation.

- Kelly Clarkson’s rendition

- Barack Obama’s speech

- The grand entrances of the various politicians

- Beyonce and Jay Z’s entrance

-The Brooklyn Tabernacle’s rendition

Fashion Moments to Remember?

1. Michelle Obama: Her ruby-colored chiffon and velvet gown designed by Jason Wu. This dress was worn during the ball. During the Inauguration Ceremony, Michelle wore a navy jacquard Thom Browne coat and dress, while accessorizing with wine-colored J Crew leather gloves and a dazzling belt. Michelle Obama also wore silver J.Crew heels and switched into Reed Krakoff suede knee-high boots.

2. Sasha and Malia Obama wore a J.Crew magenta overcoat, blue leather gloves and a purple scarf, a lavender Kate Spade coat with lavender dress and gloves.

3. Beyonce donned a Pucci dress and emerald earrings, while Jay looked dapper in a Tom Ford suit.

4. Eva Longoria Looked stunning, as always.

COUNTDOWN TO CONCLAVE – Day One

June 18, 2011 in HISTORY

In about 14 days, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. will be celebrating its 100 year mark in Indianapolis, IN. As a member of the fraternity, I have decided to countdown to this grand event and thought to myself, “What a better way to begin this countdown, than explain what the event actually is?”

Conclave (n) – a confidential or secret meeting.

Centennial (n) – 100 years

Kappa Alpha Psi’s Centennial Conclave will be held from July 2nd – 9th in Indianapolis, IN. The events surrounding this occasion are a good balance of business and pleasure.

Everyday until conclave, I will post some valuable information about our fraternity along with a highlight of one renowned member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

FACT: Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on January 5, 1911 on the campus Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.

MEMBER HIGHLIGHT: Elbert Frank Cox

Elbert Cox was an American mathematician. He became the first black person in the world to receive a PhD in mathematics.

In 1913, Elbert graduated from Clark High School and enrolled at Indiana University.  While at Indiana University, he joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and after graduating, he returned home to teach at Alves Street School in Henderson.

In 1925 he earned a PhD in mathematics from Cornell University and became the head of the Math and Physics Departments at West Virginia State University. While visiting his brother Avalon’s church, Bethel AME in Princeton, he met and later married Beulah Kaufman. In 1929, Cox joined the faculty at Howard University.  He retired in 1965 and passed on in 1969.

HAPPY CENTENNIAL to the men of KAPPA ALPHA PSI FRATERNITY, INC.

January 8, 2011 in HISTORY

(Nu Rho Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi makes it clear that the NUPES RUN THE YARD!)

(video by Gene Ray)

Let us all extend our congrats to the premier fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. founded on the predominantly white campus of Indiana University on January 5th, 1911 in Bloomington, Indiana. 10 founders successfully overcame hardships and doubts to bring something new founded on the principles of achievement to a campus where black men were not expected to make it intellectually, physically and mentally. This past week, my fraternity celebrated 100 years of achievement.

(documentary by the DIAMOND KONNECTION NUPES)

Throughout the years, Kappa men, also known as Nupes,  have left their mark in an extensive array of industries. Some noteworthy names include, Arthur Ashe Johnny Cochran, Lorenzo Wright, Robert Johnson, Tavis Smiley, Percy Sutton, Cedric the Entertainer among others. I celebrated with my brothers in New York, attending a documentary release hosted by some New York Nupes. We also showed our support by attending the Touch of Klass event (pictured below). This centennial can only mean more excellent things for the Nupes. In a few months, our biennial CONCLAVE event will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana. I cannot express how much the Nupes take over a city for a conclave event. Soulja Boy’s Pretty Boy Swag sums it up accurately. This will be a year of EPIC proportions.

SENATOR EDWARD KENNEDY :(

August 26, 2009 in HISTORY

I believe that a moment of silence is in order for one of the most influential senators of the Democrat party. Senator Edward Kennedy was a major political force within his party; he extended his powers to defend civil rights, improve the prolonged search for a fair health care system, and uphold his family’s name at a time when two of his brothers, both major political forces themselves, were sadly assassinated. Let’s bow our heads in gratitude and respect to Senator Kennedy, who died at age 77 due to his struggles with brain cancer.
